The Urgent need for Nigeria and other African  countries  to look  into  road   travel safety  across  their  cities and  what  could  be done

  by  Chinyere  Nwakanma

  Wednesday 03/01/2026  15:32 P.M BMT 10min

Nigeria the  most  populous  country in Africa, is trying  its  best  to  cater  for the  needs  of its  people , but more needs to be done according  to the United Nations. The United Nations (UN) has previously called on countries using  its  Global action plans  for  the decade   on road  safety  2021-2030 to adopt a Safe System of  approach, prioritise vulnerable users (pedestrians, cyclists), strengthen laws on the use of  (seatbelts, helmets, drink driving), improve road and vehicle designs, ensure better post-crash care, and foster multi-sectoral collaboration to halve road losses by 2030, integrating road safety as a developmental  priority.  Considering the  large  population  and lack  of speedy economic growth  in   the African  continent , Nigeria  is not doing badly  , as the  entire continent  has  been  battling  with inherited  poverty ,dating back  to early times,  caused by lack of  advancement  in technology ,lack of the  needed infrastructures, debts, ignorance and lack of knowledge of how to  do things properly. Nigeria needs to think of  building  good roads,  that are  made for only large  cars  such as the trailers  and tankers and place notices that such routes are only for larger trailers  and tankers. No smaller  cars  will  be   allowed to  take such  routes  and employ trained personals to  monitor the  routes.Nigeria need to be urgent in addressing the road  hazard  problems  across the  big cities.

Of  recently  there has been lots of  distress  across the  world , when  people  were   shown  the  state of Nigerian roads, what is happening there  and the way  people  pack their  cars  at the  wrong places , making things  to go wrong  sometimes. Nigeria needs  to beef up  work  on the  area  of  keeping its  people safe,  by bringing in  policies  that  will address  the  issue  of what happens  on its  roads giving  road user safety  a  priority, because  there  is  a race  against  time to save lots  of people.Even though the country  is large with  no efficient  resources , the  department of transport needs to work harder  to put up a stronger system, whereby cars  could  be  checked on  road worthiness. Every car driver  needs to  bring  their cars  to designated places,  where  engineers and car mechanics  can make checks, to make sure that  their cars are safe for themselves  and other people.Considering  that  not too many people have cars,  those who have cars  must have the capability  to maintain them properly, than  cause  problems  by driving cars  that are  not road  worthy. They   must enforce the age  limit laws  to car   importation  into the country and make  sure that  the  laws  are taken seriously  by the populace.Nigeria  needs  to put up a system of advertising  and educating  its populace to know that  having cars  is  for transport  and not for  status quo and teaching them that patriotism is keeping one another  safe.Driving  road worthy cars  and not driving on the  wrong lane  is  being responsible  and patriotic.Helping others to stay  safe  by  not  putting cars  in the wrong places  and driving safe cars should be on the  countries media broadcasting  agenda.A car is just  a means of transport and people  are  not allowed  to  run cars  that are breaking  down, cars that have their exhaust  pipes  fuming with carbon-dioxide  and creating pollution, the road safety  corps  need to be more  serious  in making sure that the  right vehicles are on the road with properly trained drivers.Nigeria  can think of  building  roads  that are  made for only large  cars  such as trailers  and tankers and place notices that such routes are only for larger vehicles.Nigeria needs to invest in its  road  and road  safety  no matter  how much it costs  and  open  schools that  could teach  road safety  and employ graduates from such  schools  to look  after their roads  inspect the roads and make sure that  cars  are not packed on the wrong lanes  and are good enough  to be on the road. The jobs of the road safety  personnel will be to ask people parking on the wrong lanes  to  move away  to the right places.Nigeria  can build large  parking lots in designated  places on its high roads  where drivers can pack  while on long journeys. The  government  can buy  lands  from local  landlords  to build garages  where  large cars  can park while on transit.Building road  safety schools training staff and giving them jobs  is another way of creating employment  for its people.Employing mechanical engineers and mechanics  whose jobs will  be  to check  road worthiness of cars  is another way of creating employment for people and keeping the  country safe.Employing specially  trained road corps people   to flag down cars  that are too  old  to ride on the streets  is another way  of  providing  jobs  for people.Nigeria  needs to  do more and  invest  on its  roads  to prevent situations where  its people  are afraid of travelling  and rely only on hope to travel  for long distant journeys , doing businesses or  visiting relations. It is great  to rely on hope but  faith  with no works is not  right.Nigeria can do better and use   its resources to invest  on good road practices   and bring up policies that  will keep its  travelling citizens safe. The eyes of the world is on Nigeria to see what it  will do,  to make  the  changes  and policies  that will keep  its  citizens safe on the roads  and  people  can trust its leaders  to have more media campaigns  and  education in schools on patriotism for its  populace ,just to  help  to keep  everyone safe  on its  roads.Africa's  richest  men like  Aliko  Dangote  who are  helping in so many ways , needs to think more  about  what  to do to  help Nigerians in the area of road  safety .Nigeria  has gone  a long way in its  road safety  troubles with  other third  world  countries. The  leaders  need to read  the guidelines  and the  rules given  by United nations  to all countries  and  try to follow them, just to keep the populace  safe. The  advanced countries are following the rules and  things  are  relatively fine.Africa  must save its  population  and the  world  from the constant heartaches  caused  by  the  mishaps because of lapses in the  way things are  done. The world know that  Africa  is not  so poor  that little  safety rules that needs  to be  followed and   shared  by printing  flyers  are  not being  used, making so many ignorant about road  safety  rules. It is  only by educating its populace  that  people  will see the seriousness of implementing the policies given  to the  world by United Nations. Most of the guidances  given by United  Nations  to countries on road  safety  are not being  implemented  by the  poorer countries, they  do not need  much money to be implemented ,just  by simple  education  and creation of  awareness  by circulating flyers  in hospitals  schools  and government  departments and informing  people rightly   just to keep them  safe.

What did  United Nations  say that  countries must do in the decade plan for road safety

The  united  nation  has  set  out these policies

-  Safe System Approaches: Countries should  build   roads and vehicles with human mistakes  in mind, accepting that crashes  may happen sometimes  but  fatalities could be prevented

-Policy & Legislation: They  must put in place strong laws on speeding, drink driving, the use of  seatbelts, and helmet use, making sure that everyone follows the rules.

- Funding & Data: They  must  spend money on  road safety initiatives and  check  the implementation progress to meet the 2030 targets.

- Safer  infrastructures  and Roads : Countries  must build  infrastructures that keep  the   pedestrians and cyclists  safe, focusing on "Safe & Sustainable Mobility".

-Safer Vehicles: Countries must make  sure   that vehicles  on their  roads meet  the  UN safety standards and promote safer vehicle technology.

-Safer Road Users: Countries  must promote safe behaviours through education, laws, and visible enforcement

-Post-Crash Response: Countries need to improve  emergency services and response to  injury severity.

-Multi-Sectoral Commitment:Countries  must  involve their health, transport, education, finance, police, and manufacturers  departments in coordinated efforts to make this happen.

-Funding & Data: They  must  spend money on  road safety initiatives and  check  the implementation progress to meet the 2030 targets.

The  Goals that need to be reached

The UN's strategy aims to create a global movement to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries by 50% by 2030, recognizing it as a public health and sustainable developmental issue.

What people  cannot do  in Singapore?

Many people travel to other cities without  proper knowledge  of  where they are going to, the  do’s and  don’ts  and  the cultural  etiquettes. It is wise  to know  about a  country  by studying  the do’s  or  don’ts  as no one want to know  if you are  a tourist if you do the wrong things. To avoid  extending  your  holidays  by years instead of days  while in Singapore here  is a list  of what  not to do.

- Do  not  stand still at the front or end of the escalators and block other people. There  is no way other people  will know that you are  not living local. Standing still  at the front or rear  end can lead to  arguments as  the city is  a busy city  with  people  walking fast  to  go  to offices or  shopping malls

-Do not bring vape and drugs

-Do not  eat on the trains or buses

-Do not  allow  your mobile phones  to play loud  music or large ringing tones .It is better  and polite  to carry  earphones  and listen  to music  while  sightseeing.

Finally the  Singapore  sports  Hub now known as Hallam  have state of the  Art  sports  facilities where  sports  lovers  can watch  and participate  in different  types of games.

JOURNEY TO COCKERMOUTH

At first I thought

It was a fairy tale

Of a land hidden

In the countryside

Down, down the North

Surrounded by the hills and mountains

I thought I was in a dream world

As I found myself

In a train

Moving down

The lonely paths

In the night

In search of the little town

Of Cockermouth in Cumbria

As we moved down the hills and valleys

Our train in steady motion

I gazed at the beautiful country sides

As men and women

Smiled at each other

Some in conversation

Others in deep thought

I watched the sheep and the cattle

Grazing by the countryside

And the houses

Scattered on the hills

Farmers at work

And as our train stopped

I paused

As we walked down the little town of Cockermouth

Women with friendly demeanour

Bidding us goodbye

As we alight

From the train

It’s the end of our journey

To Cockermouth in Cumbria

I smiled cos it’s   a dream come true

The city is

As its name sounds

 I thought

Small, quiet and calm

But beautiful

Just like a little cock

Inside a hole

We went through little

But long paths

Just to see

The ancient little town

Of Cockermouth in Cumbria

London-The Emergence of a beautiful new city life: Serenity

 by  Graceland  online team

Friday    21/11/2025    23:40  BMT  5mins

London is a hub of commerce and trade. It is a place where spending money seems to be a hot topic Londoners live lavish lifestyles, especially when it comes to  buying  cars ,clothes and  food. They are very hardworking, with many Londoners doing all round night and day jobs, to be able to keep up with the soaring demands of the times. Londoners seem to be adjusting to life after the virus. Many have become accustomed to being on their own, as social distancing and the lockdown have transformed many  lives. London has become more quieter after the virus . Some of its inner streets have become pin drop noise level and sometimes you wonder if the neighbours are still around. Is this the new London?.

Londoners are known for being very quiet people, staying by themselves  .They love serenity and calm neighbourhoods and with the lockdown many people are quieter. If you walk through the streets in the evenings, you can hardly hear any noises and sometimes one wonders if  the neighbours are on holidays. Londoners love reading books and watching their  televisions, sometimes the programmes could be  none of their interests, but they will keep on watching ,glued up to their televisions and when you ask them the reason why, they will shrug it off .And I have a feeling, that with the emergence of this quieter new life, Londoners prefer staying  at home now, sticking to their televisions more than ever~BBC,  while waiting  for the clock to signal that it is time to dash off to work. Find them on the streets by 4.00am jumping into the ever waiting twenty four hour red buses and cabs, looking at their expensive Cartier wristwatches, to make sure that they are at the office on the dot- dotcom living .Life is a Circus of course- Piccadilly Circus London. It is all about getting there on time and returning back in a dash.

While removing your clothes quickly, to  have a quick nap on your clean expensive sofa, as the clock chimes again, telling you that it is four a.m and time to go.  Life goes on.

Cotswolds-Amazing  villages with breathtaking beautiful sceneries

I  have written about  the Cotswolds before now ,as one of the finest places  in the country but  each day as  I use my Lavender  beauty products , they remind me of the town's  beauty.Having travelled around to see Britain's small villages   and their ancient  stone wall buildings,  which  make many to be in  awe of  the  historical  architects,  who drew the town plans and  built the stonewall villages.I always look back to the  times ,when I was  a little  girl, when my  aunt  used to rub the lavender  face  creams with their sweet  aromas. The Lavender fields  remain some of the most beautiful places to see in the United Kingdom  with their purple summer flowers  and this is what makes  Cotswold amazing with the stone  buildings. The Cotswolds are known for their  posh English stone villages and beautiful countryside. They are known for their picture perfect places, ancient market towns and outdoor activities like walking and exploring scenic places. The region's beauty also comes from its history, with its wealth built on the medieval wool trade, leaving behind grand churches and strongly built cottages.

Apart from the  beautiful  architectural buildings, there is an aspect  of London that  many people  seem to be overlooking –the London  gardens. Most people  are more interested  in doing  businesses in London, than  looking at the vast natural  resources and places of  leisure visits that London has. From the  zoos to the gardens , London remains  a top  spot on  city,  to visit  in  the world. It  is  summer the London gardens stand out. From towns  closer to  Essex  to the other posh royal garden   homes  are decorated using beautiful flowers. Some people for  the reasons of their  busy  times  have resorted  to  using plastic  flowers for decorations. But many people are  displaying natural  hanging basket flowers , which are beautiful  and make the city a memorable  place to be and a place to always remember. It is  easy  to think  mostly about London as a place to  make so much money , but  London remains  a top spot and a spot on place  for  those  who love nature and flowers.
